Condolence & Memory Journal

I was 13 when my family came to Wichita Falls as refugees, and the Wilkes was the first family to help us settle down. With so much going on with getting adjusted to our new home and just for growing up, the first few years were mostly a blur to me when I thought back many years later. But I do remember the kindness Mr. and Mrs. Wilkes and her children showed us. I remembered the day she drove my sister and me to the school before classes started so that she could point things out to us, like how the kids just dressed casually in jeans, a simple gesture only a thoughtful mother would think of.

And I always remembered how she had her reading glasses hung around her neck all the time. The day I bought a chain for my own reading glasses a few years ago, I thought of her. And when I went to a family reunion in Houston later that year wearing the glasses around my neck, my cousin Huy said I reminded him of Mrs. Wilkes!

Mr. and Mrs. Wilkes, we may go on with our busy lives since those first years in Wichita Falls, but we always remember you and your kindness. We will miss you, but we are happy that you are together with your Lord now. Our prayers to your sons and their families.

Martha was a long time customer and mother of my friend Steve. I looked forward to my HVAC service visits with her. She was one of those VIP customers that was dear to me. I am going to miss her.Prayers for the family. Sorry I was unable to make her service.

Martha was always such a wonderful person to spend time conversing with. So many fond memories standing out in the yard and taking for hours. She used to love being outside. She was always such a good friend and neighbor to my family. We will miss her so very much. May the Lord be with the Wilkes family at this time.
